Bâlea Lake

The Bâlea area, a corner of the Făgăraș Mountains, harbors one of Romania’s most impressive natural treasures – Bâlea Lake, also known as Bâlea Lac. This beautiful glacial lake is located in Sibiu County and is considered one of the most well-known and beautiful lakes of this kind in the country.

Situated at a stunning altitude of approximately 2,034 meters above sea level, Bâlea Lake stands out as one of the highest glacial lakes in Romania. It is part of a significant natural reserve, spanning an area of 180 hectares and bordered by the impressive peaks of the Făgăraș Mountains, such as Vânătoarea lui Buteanu (2,507 m), Vârful Capra (2,496 m) and Vârful Paltinu Mare (2,398 m), along with Muchia Buteanu and Piscul Bâlii. This exceptional area shelters not only spectacular landscapes, but also a variety of rare plants, such as edelweiss, and protected animals, including the chamois, lynx, and golden eagle.

Bâlea Lake is easily accessible, located approximately 77 km from Sibiu, 68 km from Făgăraș, and 85 km from Curtea de Argeș. During the summer season, it can be easily explored via the famous Transfăgărășan highway. During the rest of the year, the journey to Bâlea Lake becomes a unique experience with the help of the cable car, which starts from the Bâlea Waterfall Chalet, located near the Bâlea waterfall.
