water sports in the mountains
Paddling on Vidraru Lake
Do you know that you don’t need to go to the seaside to enjoy water sports? You can practice water sports and in the mountains. Located approximately 5 km away from Poiana Mucenicului, on the spectacular Transfăgărășan, Vidraru Lake offers opportunities for water enthusiasts. In addition to the classic boat or kayak rides, for those seeking adrenaline, there is the option of paddleboarding, or in short, SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboarding).
The connection with nature, the peace that envelops you when you’re in the middle of the lake on a paddleboard, the surrounding forest, the view of the mountains to the north, the Vidraru Dam to the south and the fresh mountain air are just a few of the advantages of paddleboarding on Lake Vidraru.
Access to the area we recommend for this sport is from the main road, near the Valea cu Pești hotel. You can even leave your car in the parking lot at the bottom of the hotel. Then you go down to the edge of the lake where there is a pontoon. It would be best to have your own paddle boarding equipment because this is a relatively new sport in Romania and there is not yet the possibility of renting the necessary board and paddle.
The feeling you have when you are on the water, knowing that beneath you, the ground is at 155 meters, that there are quite strong currents that could overturn you if you don’t paddle carefully, and that the tranquility is only disrupted by the occasional flight of a bird near the water’s surface, cannot be put into words. You have to be there to truly understand what paddleboarding is all about. And you might even be lucky enough to spot a bear cooling off in the water during the summer, trying to escape the heat.
