Located just 2 km away from the picturesque village of Căpățâneni, the Poenari Fortress captivates you not only through its architectural beauty and strategic location but also through the mystery and historically significant tales it holds. It was the second residence of the legendary Vlad Tepes, son of Vlad Dracul and grandson of Mircea cel Batran, following the renowned fortress in Târgoviște. At the same time, this fortress played a crucial role in defense against the advance of the Ottoman Empire during tumultuous periods of history.
Originally built by the first Basarabs, the Poenari Fortress has had a variety of uses throughout time. It served as a shelter for Romanian rulers or as the treasury of Wallachia, but also as a terrifying dungeon for prisoners. If you are eager to discover this history-laden place, we recommend making a short stop. Leave your car near the nearby campsite and get ready for an unforgettable experience. The 1480 built steps leading to the citadel will take you through a beautiful beech forest, and at an altitude of 850 meters, you will arrive in front of the famous fortress of Vlad Tepes.
The name of the citadel comes from the village of Poenari, located in the Argeș Valley, just 6 km away.
